All states have enacted the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act in some form — the 1968 version, the 1987 version, or some variant. See List.

The purpose of the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act is to allow you to make a choice, while you are living, to donate your body or organs to help others — for transplantation to save lives of those who will otherwise die, for medical research, or other purposes after your death. When you are dead, what's left should go to help others.

Many states allow you to specify on your driver's license, in a will, living will or otherwise, if you intend to make an anatomical gift or actually make the gift in those documents. Indicating your desire on your driver's license is very important because it helps insure that others know of your wishes. It also makes it less traumatic on your family if they know your choices. A formal 'document of gift' completely resolves the questions; and, you spare your family the often heart wrenching trauma of that decision by letting everyone know your desires and formalizing your gift in advance.

States which have enacted the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act will usually recognize a standard Anatomical Gift document which is validly executed elsewhere.
