South Dakota has adopted a variant of the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act. This variant is based on the 1968 Act, but in fact and form is much closer to the 1987 Act. In some respects, it is more favorable to and encourages the easier making of anatomical gifts than the 1987 Act.

South Dakota law provides a simpler anatomical gift form than the 1968 or 1987 Acts. You may also use your driver's license, or prepare a 'document of gift,' such as the one provided on this website.

An anatomical gift need not be witnessed or notarized; and, only takes effect after your death.

You can give all or only specified parts of your body, such as the corneas, heart, kidneys, lungs, etc.

With some restrictions, you may specify who will receive your donation. You should contact any medical school or other recipient you select to make certain they can make appropriate use of your gift of life. If a specified recipient does not accept a donation, it may be go to your attending physician or any person or organization authorized by law to receive anatomical gifts.
